What is the safest and nearest suburb to Detroit ?? I will work in the Detroit department of health ZIP.48202?

There are many but you may want to consider living downtown as well a suggestion is too click on the Detroit News classified section for housing. Also i would like to recommend apartment finders there are many areas inside the city through this service check it out before you head too the suburbs. Apartment Finders provides transportation too the areas of interest and most are quite nice, they go by the amount of rent you want to pay. I would look downtown or on the riverfront in Detroit. If you are looking for suburban lifestyle I recommend Livonia, Farmington Hills or the Grosse Pointes.

Grosse Point is a wonderful suburb with amazing schools, restaurants and sense of community. The homes are beautiful yet affordable. The best part is it's a moment's drive into the city. Be ready to pull out your sear sucker suit and yachting clothing because it's that kind of place (I hope you're into that).

I'm a Detroit native and would avoid living in the city at all cost. Taxes are high and people who live in the city don't really care about it. What are you looking for in a town? Buy or rent? That info will help, but in short: Ferndale is a very close, northern suburb. It's a hip, trendy and very liberal town and you can find rentals pretty cheap. North of that is Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge and Birmingham (price goes up respevtively). Grosse Pointe is to the north/east of Detroit and is a more conservative, preppy area with nice schools, homes and parks. Rentals are pretty affordable here, but purchasing a home can be costly (more because of taxes than purchase price). Any of these suggestions are less than 30 m inute commute. Good luck and congrats on the new job. The metro-Detroit area is a great place to live!

If you can afford it, Grosse pointe, and downtown Detroit would be your best option for a safe suburb. If you want an affordable and safe area, Dearborn, Redord, and Ferndale are good options.

If you are working at the Herman Kiefer Health Complex off of the Lodge freeway, the closest suburb is Southfield. There are a number of apartments for you to choose from, some that serve a mainly mid-east clientele. Check with your own religous temple, church, mosque or ashram for help. However, you will be able to find housing within walking distance of the Herman Kiefer Health Complex. If you live near the complex you will save on gasoline and the hassle of driving. Finally, there is a very unique city that is within the boundries of Detroit: Hamtramck. I know it sounds unusual, but Hamtramck is surrounded by Detroit, but it has its own unique flair. The folks of Hamtramck are very welcoming to new people, and if you think you might be lonesome, I suggest moving to Hamtramck, you will meet new friends every day.

Everyone is going to give his/her opinion about "safest" Go on a database of some sort to find actual stats. Goggle perspective towns you think you would like to live and get the towns stats As for nearest there are several. Have you looked in the Mid-town area? It is awesome despite what other posters may say. It has come a long way. No city or suburb is w/o its crime and while true the cost of owning in the D is very high (taxes,insurance...) It has much to offer. Southfield tax millage is through the roof. Ferndale and Oak Park are still close to the D and have better rates. If renting I think your best bet (dollar wise) is in the D. Ask some of your future co-workers where they live and what they like/dislike in their town. Gas here is around 4.05 for 87 if that is a issue for you. Public trans is available but don't expect it to be like something of other major cities in the US. Ride share is way up and improvements are being made. If you live in the D (at least the mid-town area) you could quite possible go w/o a car. However in the burbs (G.P., Ferndale, Royal Oak, F Hills, Southfield...) you more then likely will need a car.
