I suppose another example would be whether or not a us citizen who lives in northwest washington could legally work daily in vancouver, british columbia

Answer 1 :
Yes, as long as the company has offices in the U.S..
Answer 2 :
Yeah, but going through customs everyday and both ways would not make it a very fun commute. That part alone can add an hour or two (each way) to the commute.

You can get your permit at your City Hall, or your school counselor. As for jobs, it would be VERY tough for you to find one unless you do something super local. A restaurant in your town, or working part time somewhere. Good luck!

About moving to Detroit to work in RenCen. Which Detroit community should I consider

Moving to Detroit to work in RenCen. Which Detroit community should I consider?
I am going to be working in the Renaissance Center. I have spent time in Troy and Rochester and I like those communities but I am worried about the commute. I would love Bermingham but the cost and the commute would be a concern. It is only my wife and myself as our children are grown. My wife likes to run early morning so safety is a concern. My ideal location would be a nice, quiet, affordable community with an easy commute to downtown and decent shopping and restaurant selection. We are also wanting to downsize our home but we still want features like high ceilings, art niches, etc. in the home. Moving to a high rise would probably challenge our comfort zone. If you know of a web site that compares the various neighborhoods I would love to see that URL. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance for your answers.

Answer 1 :
one that is not in Detroit.
Answer 2 :
try looking at some realator sites. they sometimes have attractions in the community and some crime ratings.i did that when i was planning on moving to florida.
Answer 3 :
Troy is the safest city in Michigan. I just relocated an employee from Mexico to Troy - he was mostly concerned about his children going to a good school and Troy has the best school system. Macomb - where I live - quiet, safe, 21 miles north of Detroit. Good school system as well (Chippawa Valley) The commute is about 45 minutes though. From Troy it's about 25 minutes downtown. Rochester Hills, Farmington Hills, Canton, Plymouth and Northville are nice too!
Answer 4 :
Royal Oak is the best community. I lived there for almost 2 yrs and am DYING to get back. If only I didn't work so far from there! :( It's packed with things to do and there's not alot of crime. Great restaurants. It's a younger community, but it's local to everything.
Answer 5 :
Dearborn is a nice community and will meet your budget and commute from Detroit. They're aren't many problems if any in Dearborn and really they are developing more and more things in te area. You should find some houses to meet your expectatons, but it wont be like Rochester, Troy, Birmingham.
Answer 6 :
Hey what about saint clair county? Its very very safe, almost so much that nothing ever goes on, pretty boring. Its abut 40 minutes away from detroit, very sceanic in saint clair and marine city. I dont really like it there because its pretty boring but its a nice safe place to live and grow up.
Answer 7 :
Indian Village, Palmer Park and check for condos around Wayne State University. I can't remeber what the condos there are called. Or Grosse Pointe which is right outside of Detroit. It can get a little pricey though. I don't know what affordable is to you. To the goof ball that said outside of Detroit obviously doesn't know what they are talking about. There is some prime real estate in Detroit. Check with a real estate agency. Not St. Clair or Marine City. Too far. More then 40 minutes. The commute will kill you.
Answer 8 :
Royal Oak and Huntington Woods are great communities within a short drive down Woodward Ave. to the Ren Cen. Both have really nice areas and great schools and police departments. Royal Oak is a very modern hip town with a thriving downtown area with shops, restaurants, clubs. Everyone drives to go hang out in Royal Oak.
Answer 9 :
I worked in the Ren Cen for years. The east side is closest. Safest communities on the east side are the Grosse Pointes. The Grosse Pointes are upscale, but not as expesive as some of the newer communites. I see that your children are grown, but schools are top-notch - over 90% of the students are college-bound. I believe this says something about the communtiy. The Grosse Pointes are close to Detroit, but very safe. Lots of nice places to walk at night and lots of beautiful parks. Great libraries for the readers among us. Housing market here now is great for the buyer. Lots of houses for sale. Usually the Grosse Pointes have more buyers than sellers, but the ecomony in Michigan, especially for engineers and other white-collar professionals is not great. As far as home go, lots of different sizes. Homes here are not new, but very well-kept many remodeled extensively. Most have hardwood floors thoughout, ceramic baths and kitchens, and wet-plaster walls with cove ceilings. Many of the older homes have higher sealings (such as in Grosse Pointe Park). If you are looking for a more blue-collar neighborhoold, St. Clair Shores is a nice little bedroom community. Also, Harrison Township is more expensive, but very popular. Hope this helps.

It may not be the job he wants but have him try a moving company. Go to the larger ones like a United Van Lines, Allied Van Lines or North American Van lines. Helpers here in Chicago make around 12.00 to 15.00 an Hr.
Answer 2 :
he could check with the local one stop (formerly unemployment office) for a Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC, available online at www.lmi.gov) where employers will earn a tax break of $1200 to $2400 per year if they hire and guarantee at least 1 yr of work. Most employers don't know about this tax break for them. Good luck!!
Answer 3 :
I only know of one and it is rock-solid company. Their primary concern is the present and especially the future. It is a home-based business and internet access is a must. Information is obtained at 1-800-476-8427. Don't call unless you are serious, a hard worker, and love helpin gpeople to help themselves. If I can help email me. Larry marathon777

About I work at East Lansing, MI, my husband works in Detroit... where to live

I work at East Lansing, MI, my husband works in Detroit... where to live?
As the title says... I was offered a PhD position at MSU in East Lansing, MI and my husband found a job in Detroit. What would be the best place, more or less halfway, to live in? On the map Brighton seems to be in the middle, would it be a good place? How easy/hard would it be to rent/buy a house there? Coming from Italy... we appreciate all answers!
Detroit - 9 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Brighton is very nice, but Fenton, MI is a great place to live, more upper class, less crime. I'm sure at this time it would be fairly simple to buy a house, renting I'm not sure, but I don't think it would be too much of a problem.
Answer 2 :
I would say Fowlerville or Webberville. They're both about evenly midway between each city.
Answer 3 :
There is distance and then there is time. The congestion in Detroit will force your husband to spend a lot of time in the car. For example, let's say you live in Brighton. You will be at work in 40 minutes, but hubby will be in his car for 1 hour 15 mintues. I suggest you look at Milford or Whitmore Lake. Milford has a lovely little downtown. Whitmore Lake is in the middle of nowhere, but it is pretty.
Answer 4 :
Brighton is a great city with lots to offer. The downtown area is very nice with several shops and great restaurants. There is also a new mall on the East end of town if you're interested in shopping. Just beware of the roundabouts. You can make it from Brighton to Lansing in about 45 minutes. Your husband can make it to Detroit in About an hour. There are also several other communites in the area which are good to live in: Hartland, Pinckney, Howell, Fenton. The house market around here (I live near Hartland, just North of Brighton) is pretty open, because the house market in Michigan is low. You'll be able to get something decent at a good price. Just be sure to shop around.
Answer 5 :
I lived in Brighton and have driven both ways. It it right next to 96 the freeway you both need to take. It is the perfect place for you... location wise. Brighton is a wonderful area, small townish, great schools, low crime. With the poor economy it's a house buyers dream right now. And Brighton has plenty of new upscale and older farm type homes as well.
Answer 6 :
Yep..........that would be ok........your gonna get killed on gas...........
Answer 7 :
i grew up in detroit and go to msu, so i'm back and forth between the two quite frequently. your best bet would be brighton. it's right in the middle of the two. it's a nice city, and would be a great place to start a family. depending on traffic, it should be about 45 mins for each of you.
Answer 8 :
Brighton, Novi, South Lyon (a little closer to Detroit) but excellent area and not as busy as the other two, and a great school system. Should have no problem finding a house, they are all real nice places, but a little on the expensive side because of it. Renting a house in Novi and Brighton would be easier than South Lyon, but buying everywhere you should be fine. Good luck.
Answer 9 :
Whitmore Lake is very nice. Stockbridge is quaint and quite

Answer 1 :
I know the plight that you are in. I'm currently enrolled in CNA classes myself, and I've applied to 4 different jobs at a nearby hospital. One has turned me down and the other three I will probably never hear back from. The hospitals around town demand that you have 1 year of experience in a hospital, so that is a huge problem, especially when you want to get into the hospital setting to gain experience for a higher degree (especially Bachelors of Science in Nursing or BSN). While I do not know of a specific place that is hiring CNAs in Detroit, I do know that nursing homes are often a good way to get the experience necessary to get into the hospital setting. I am warning you though that CNAs are paid diddly squat and work so hard, which is why there is such a high turnover. I would highly advise that you seek a degree that will pay more in health care, such as a Licensed Practical Nurse or a BSN, because you will probably find the same problem in your CNA job as you do now. I would use CNA as a stepping stone and not as a final career. You will most likely hate your job by the end of a couple years working. You should also look into getting specialized training, such as CPR (if you don't have it) or what they call Q-MAP. A Q-MAP is a CNA that is trained to pass off drugs to the patients. Either one of these will make you really valuable in the hospital setting and any other setting that you will be a part of. Overall, CNAs are overworked and underpaid, so my advice would be go back to college and live partially off of financial aid and partially off of a part-time CNA job in these nursing homes until you can get a better degree. Second of all, I would either apply at a nursing home or I would try to volunteer at a hospital for 6 months or so before applying for a job. Through the volunteer work and the connections that you make at the hospital, you might have an in and may be readily hired, especially if you know the facility really well. Try asking nurse friends that you volunteer with to talk to the charge nurse to see if they need any CNA work in their department or even ask the charge nurse yourself and become close to them. I would say try to be as friendly with as many doctors and nurses as possible if you do volunteer, as that may help you get a job later on. You never know, a doctor may like you enough to hire you on into their private practice (if they have one), which wouldn't be a bad job. You would still be interacting with patients, but you wouldn't have 20 patients assigned to you to deal with within an hour. It's always worth a try (but never communicate your goal to doctors or nurses unless you know that this person will not think unkindly of you).

About I'm going to be in Detroit for work for several days. Is it ok to stay downtown, or better in a suburb

I'm going to be in Detroit for work for several days. Is it ok to stay downtown, or better in a suburb?
I'm thinking about Dearborn - how does that compare to downtown Detroit?
Detroit - 8 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Dearborn is very nice but downtown is a little more busy. I would say yes to Dearborn they have some great hotels especially the Hyatt, I just was there last weekend. A++
Answer 2 :
There are many beautiful sights in downtown Detroit. They just rebuilt one, or two?, of the hotels are from what I've heard are beautiful. If your not working inside of the city then get your hotel in the city you'll be doing business in. Yes, Dearborns Hyatt is gorgeous but rather expensive. (unless your employer is popping for the hotel room, then GO! ) lol
Answer 3 :
I work downtown and Downtown Detroit is safe. I would advise staying at the Marriot in the GM Renaissance Center. They have shopping, restaurants and a movie theatre all within. Other than that, you could always stay at the casinos ($150 a night), or the Athenaeum Suites in Greektown. All in all, Downtown Detroit is better. More to do. During the day, the downtown area is bustling with white collar professional and they have plenty of upscale eateries and things to do. Dearborn is just OK for lodging. If you want to do much, there's not much to do. Lots of strip bars along the major strip in Dearborn.
Answer 4 :
I assume you are going to be working right downtown. Stay downtown. The Book Cadillac is a fantastic place, newly rehabbed from the basement to the roof. Very posh. But you can't go wrong with staying at the RenCen hotel. Great views of Canada. A wonderful place to eat on the roof and the Riverwalk is right outside the door. I don't recommend Dearborn just because you'll spend too much time in the car. The street system will confuse you and you could get lost. Ease your stress, stay downtown. It is very safe.
Answer 5 :
Yes stay downtown much better then dearborn.
Answer 6 :
Downtown pretty safe. I would just say don't go wandering around outside of downtown. Know where you going. and no this is no opinion I live in Detroit and I can tell you from experience.
Answer 7 :
Downtown Detroit is nice but very very busy. Dearborn is very nice and just a short drive if you don't want to be in the thick of the hustle and bustle just stay in west Dearborn though, the east side is a bit on the seedy side.
Answer 8 :
I live downtown, and its definetly the place to be, especially if your going to be in downtown Detroit for work.
