I work at East Lansing, MI, my husband works in Detroit... where to live?
As the title says... I was offered a PhD position at MSU in East Lansing, MI and my husband found a job in Detroit. What would be the best place, more or less halfway, to live in? On the map Brighton seems to be in the middle, would it be a good place? How easy/hard would it be to rent/buy a house there? Coming from Italy... we appreciate all answers!

Answer 1 :
Brighton is very nice, but Fenton, MI is a great place to live, more upper class, less crime. I'm sure at this time it would be fairly simple to buy a house, renting I'm not sure, but I don't think it would be too much of a problem.
Answer 2 :
I would say Fowlerville or Webberville. They're both about evenly midway between each city.
Answer 3 :
There is distance and then there is time. The congestion in Detroit will force your husband to spend a lot of time in the car. For example, let's say you live in Brighton. You will be at work in 40 minutes, but hubby will be in his car for 1 hour 15 mintues. I suggest you look at Milford or Whitmore Lake. Milford has a lovely little downtown. Whitmore Lake is in the middle of nowhere, but it is pretty.

Brighton is a great city with lots to offer. The downtown area is very nice with several shops and great restaurants. There is also a new mall on the East end of town if you're interested in shopping. Just beware of the roundabouts. You can make it from Brighton to Lansing in about 45 minutes. Your husband can make it to Detroit in About an hour. There are also several other communites in the area which are good to live in: Hartland, Pinckney, Howell, Fenton. The house market around here (I live near Hartland, just North of Brighton) is pretty open, because the house market in Michigan is low. You'll be able to get something decent at a good price. Just be sure to shop around.
Answer 5 :
I lived in Brighton and have driven both ways. It it right next to 96 the freeway you both need to take. It is the perfect place for you... location wise. Brighton is a wonderful area, small townish, great schools, low crime. With the poor economy it's a house buyers dream right now. And Brighton has plenty of new upscale and older farm type homes as well.

Yep..........that would be ok........your gonna get killed on gas...........
Answer 7 :
i grew up in detroit and go to msu, so i'm back and forth between the two quite frequently. your best bet would be brighton. it's right in the middle of the two. it's a nice city, and would be a great place to start a family. depending on traffic, it should be about 45 mins for each of you.
Answer 8 :
Brighton, Novi, South Lyon (a little closer to Detroit) but excellent area and not as busy as the other two, and a great school system. Should have no problem finding a house, they are all real nice places, but a little on the expensive side because of it. Renting a house in Novi and Brighton would be easier than South Lyon, but buying everywhere you should be fine. Good luck.
Answer 9 :
Whitmore Lake is very nice. Stockbridge is quaint and quite
